When hiring a skip bin in Cairns, most people first consider bin size: 2 cubic metres, 4 cubic metres, 6 cubic metres or larger. However, the weight and type of waste are just as important as volume. A skip bin that appears only half full can still be overweight if it contains soil, concrete, tiles, bricks, pavers, wet green waste, timber, demolition debris or other dense materials.
Understanding approximate waste weight helps Cairns homeowners, tradies and builders choose the correct skip bin, improve site safety, avoid collection delays and reduce the risk of overweight or additional disposal charges. This is especially important across Tropical North Queensland, where heavy rain, humidity and cyclone-season conditions can quickly add weight to green waste, soil, timber and mixed renovation waste.
The easiest way to estimate the likely weight of waste in a skip bin is to multiply the volume of waste by the approximate weight per cubic metre:
Example:
If you place 4 cubic metres of light general waste into a skip and the material weighs about 150 kg per cubic metre, the estimated total weight is $4 times 150 = 600text{ kg}$.
| Waste Type | Typical Weight Guide | Notes |
| Green waste | Up to 150 kg per cubic metre for light green waste | Branches should be kept within accepted size limits. Wet vegetation can become heavier. |
| Light domestic waste | Up to 100 kg per cubic metre | Suitable for many household and commercial clean-ups without heavy materials. |
| General waste | Up to 150 kg per cubic metre | May include a small quantity of heavier material such as renovation or building waste. |
| Heavy waste | Can be much heavier; total bin limits apply | Includes soil, concrete, bricks, blocks, pavers, tiles, builders waste and tree stumps. |
| Loose dry soil | About 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre | Excavated material expands when dug out, so allow extra volume. |
Estimate the volume: Work out roughly how many cubic metres of material you need to dispose of. A cubic metre is a cube one metre wide, one metre long and one metre high.
Identify the waste type: Separate light waste from heavy waste where possible. A bin full of household rubbish weighs very differently from a bin full of soil or concrete.
Apply a weight guide: Multiply your estimated volume by the typical weight per cubic metre for that material.
Allow for expansion: Excavated soil and similar materials loosen when dug out. A practical rule is to allow about 25% extra volume after excavation.
Consider moisture: Rain, humidity and wet ground conditions can significantly increase the weight of green waste, soil, timber and mixed waste.
Example 1: Domestic Waste
A customer fills a 4 cubic metre skip with old furniture, packaging, household items and light clean-up waste.
Calculation: $4text{ m}^3 times 150text{ kg} = 600text{ kg}$ approximate weight.
Example 2: General Renovation Waste
A customer cleaning up after a small renovation has timber, plasterboard, packaging and a small amount of tiles or bricks.
Calculation: $3text{ m}^3 times 300text{ kg} = 900text{ kg}$ approximate weight.
Example 3: Excavated Soil
A trench produces 2 cubic metres of compacted soil. Once excavated, the soil may loosen by around 25%, becoming approximately 2.5 cubic metres.
Calculation: $2.5text{ m}^3 times 1.5text{ tonnes} = 3.75text{ tonnes}$ estimated weight.
Concrete, bricks and besser block walls are among the most common reasons a skip bin becomes overweight. These materials are dense, so it is important to estimate the weight before demolition or removal begins.
Plain concrete: Use about 2.4 tonnes per cubic metre.
Reinforced concrete: Use about 2.5 tonnes per cubic metre as a planning guide.
Example: A concrete path 5 metres long, 1 metre wide and 100 mm (0.1 m) thick has a volume of $5 times 1 times 0.1 = 0.5text{ m}^3$.
Estimated weight: $0.5 times 2.4 = 1.2text{ tonnes}$.
There are two practical ways to estimate the weight of a besser block wall:
Method 1 (By block count):
$text{Block count} times text{average block weight}$
Standard $390 times 190 times 190text{ mm}$ hollow besser blocks commonly weigh around 12.5 kg to 18 kg each. If the wall is core-filled with concrete, allow extra weight for the concrete fill.
Method 2 (By wall area):
$text{Wall area} times text{blocks per square metre}$
A standard $390 times 190text{ mm}$ block face is commonly estimated at about 12.5 blocks per square metre.
Example: A wall 6 metres long and 1.8 metres high has an area of $10.8text{ m}^2$.
Block count: $10.8 times 12.5 = 135text{ blocks}$.
Estimated weight (at 16 kg/block): $135 times 16text{ kg} = 2,160text{ kg}$ (about 2.16 tonnes), before allowing for mortar, render, reinforcing steel or concrete core fill.
When concrete is broken up, it takes up more space than it did as a solid slab or wall because there are air gaps between the pieces. The weight does not disappear, but the loose rubble volume increases. This means a skip may look less full of solid material by weight than by volume, or reach its safe lifting limit before the bin appears full.
| Concrete or Blockwork Item | Quick Estimate | Example |
| Plain concrete slab | $text{Length} times text{width} times text{thickness} times 2.4text{ t/m}^3$ | $5text{ m} times 1text{ m} times 0.1text{ m} times 2.4 = 1.2text{ t}$ |
| Reinforced concrete | $text{Length} times text{width} times text{thickness} times 2.5text{ t/m}^3$ | Use where mesh or rebar is present. |
| Besser block wall | $text{Wall area} times 12.5text{ blocks/m}^2 times text{block weight}$ | $10.8text{ m}^2 times 12.5 times 16text{ kg} = 2.16text{ t}$ |
| Core-filled besser block wall | $text{Blocks} + text{concrete fill} + text{reinforcing steel}$ | Allow significantly more weight than hollow blockwork. |
Note: These calculations are estimates only. Actual weights vary depending on concrete mix, reinforcement, moisture, block type, mortar, render and whether the wall is hollow or core-filled. Customers should always describe concrete, brick or blockwork loads before booking so the correct bin and waste classification can be confirmed.
Heavy waste such as soil, concrete, bricks, pavers and tiles can reach the weight limit long before the skip bin is full. Overloading a bin can make it unsafe to lift or transport and may result in the bin being unable to be collected until material is removed.
For this reason, heavy material should be discussed before ordering. In many cases, it is better to use a smaller bin for dense material or to separate heavy waste from light waste so the load can be managed safely and priced correctly.
Some materials are not simply heavy; they are prohibited or require special handling. These commonly include:
Asbestos or fibre cement products
Batteries, paints, fuels, oils, solvents
Tyres, gas cylinders, explosives
Dead animals and general food waste
If there is any chance that asbestos or another hazardous material is present, stop work and seek proper advice before loading the bin.
Tell your skip provider exactly what you are putting in the bin before booking.
Separate soil, concrete, bricks and pavers from light waste where possible.
Do not overfill the skip above the rim.
Keep the bin covered if rain is expected, especially when disposing of green waste, soil or timber.
Use the right waste classification so the bin is priced and handled correctly.
