Skip Bin Hire Cairns: Prepare Your Home and Yard Early for Cyclone Season

Cyclones are part of life in Cairns and Far North Queensland. Australia’s official tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, and our location near the Coral Sea means every wet season brings the possibility of destructive winds, intense rainfall, flooding and disruption. A direct crossing is never guaranteed, and cyclone tracks cannot be known months in advance, but past events show why local households should prepare well before a system appears on the forecast.

What Previous Cyclones Have Taught Cairns and Far North Queensland

Severe Tropical Cyclone Larry (2006): Larry formed in the eastern Coral Sea and intensified rapidly as it moved west towards the Queensland coast at a faster-than-normal speed. It reached Category 5 over water before undergoing changes to its eyewall and weakening slightly. Around daybreak on 20 March, Larry crossed near Innisfail as a Category 4 cyclone. The fast-moving system caused extensive wind damage to buildings, powerlines, forests and crops between Babinda and Tully, with significant impacts extending north towards Cairns and inland across the Atherton Tablelands. About 10,000 homes were damaged, prolonged power outages followed, and Larry’s remnants later produced severe flooding in north-west Queensland.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi (2011): Yasi developed north-west of Fiji and strengthened quickly while tracking west across the Coral Sea. As it turned west-southwest and accelerated towards the tropical Queensland coast, it intensified from Category 3 to Category 4 and then reached Category 5 early on 2 February. The large and powerful system crossed near Mission Beach between midnight and 1 am on 3 February. Its destructive core caused major damage around Tully and Cardwell, with extensive impacts to structures and vegetation between Innisfail and Townsville. Heavy rain of generally 200–300 mm in 24 hours fell between Cairns and Ayr, causing flooding. Yasi retained a strong core as it moved inland across northern Queensland before weakening to a tropical low near Mount Isa later that day.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Jasper (2023): Jasper first reached Category 5 well out in the Coral Sea, then weakened as it turned west towards Far North Queensland. After passing south of Willis Island as a Category 1 system, it strengthened again to Category 2 before crossing near Wujal Wujal, about 120 kilometres north-northwest of Cairns, on the evening of 13 December. The strongest winds affected areas south of the centre towards Port Douglas. Jasper weakened quickly after landfall, but the danger was not over: its remnant low stalled over Cape York Peninsula, while a near-stationary trough and moisture from the Coral Sea produced persistent heavy to intense rainfall. With catchments already wet, widespread flooding followed across the North Tropical Queensland coast over the next several days.

That is why cyclone preparation should start with the jobs that cannot be left until the last minute. Clearing loose rubbish, accumulated garden waste and unwanted outdoor items can reduce hazards around the property and help keep access, drains and surrounding areas clear. A Norhire skip bin gives Cairns households a practical way to complete this work early, while there is still time to sort waste correctly and arrange collection before severe weather becomes a concern.

Do the Big Clean-Up Before a Cyclone Is Approaching

Once a cyclone is moving towards the Far North Queensland coast, your priorities should be monitoring official warnings, checking emergency supplies, securing outdoor equipment and following your household cyclone plan—not starting a major shed, garage or garden clean-out. Roads and disposal facilities may become busy, services can change and conditions may deteriorate quickly. Book your Cairns skip bin hire early and allow enough time for the bin to be collected weeks before destructive winds and cyclone conditions become a possiblity.

What Can You Clear with a Norhire Skip Bin in Cairns?

  • Garden and green waste: palm fronds, prunings, fallen branches and built-up yard waste.
  • Damaged outdoor items: broken furniture, old play equipment, cracked pots and unusable storage containers.
  • Shed and garage clutter: unwanted timber, packaging, general household junk and suitable renovation offcuts.
  • Loose yard materials: scraps and unwanted objects that could be moved by strong wind.
  • Bulky household rubbish: larger unwanted items that are difficult to take away in a car or trailer.

Different waste types may require different bins, so tell Norhire what you are cleaning up before you book. Asbestos, batteries, gas bottles, chemicals and other hazardous or restricted materials must not go into a general waste skip bin. If you are unsure about an item, ask our local team before loading it.

Keep Garden Waste Out of Cairns Drains and Waterways

From Norhire’s experience supplying skip bins for property repairs after previous cyclones, some homes have suffered additional flood damage where nearby drains and waterways were obstructed. Garden prunings, palm fronds and other green waste placed in drainage channels during the year can restrict water flow during intense tropical rainfall. This may contribute to water backing up around neighbouring properties when the drainage system is under pressure.

Always dispose of garden tidy-up waste responsibly. Never dump branches, leaves or palm fronds into drains, creeks or waterways. What seems out of the way in the dry season may wash downstream, create a blockage and come back to affect your property or someone else’s during a cyclone or major rain event. A Norhire green waste skip bin in Cairns provides a safer, more responsible way to remove garden waste before the wet season.

Your Early Cyclone Clean-Up Checklist for Cairns

  1. Inspect your property. Walk around the yard, patio, carport, shed, garage, gutters and fence line to identify loose, damaged or unwanted items.
  2. Sort before you load. Separate items that can be reused, donated or recycled, then confirm the correct skip bin waste type.
  3. Tackle garden work early. Arrange any approved tree work before the wet season becomes active, and never work near powerlines.
  4. Book the right Norhire skip bin. Choose a bin size that gives you enough room without overfilling.
  5. Keep access clear. Make sure gates, drains and paths around your home remain easy to reach.
  6. Arrange collection early. Have your skip bin removed well before a cyclone watch or warning affects Cairns.

Make Skip Bin Hire Part of Your Cairns Cyclone Preparation

A clean yard can reduce loose debris, but a skip bin clean-up is only one part of preparing your Cairns home. Maintain your roof, gutters and downpipes; safely manage overhanging branches; secure outdoor furniture, trailers and boats; prepare an emergency kit; understand local flood and storm-tide risks; and follow advice from the Bureau of Meteorology, Cairns Regional Council and emergency authorities. If a cyclone is already approaching, do not begin a major clean-up or put yourself at risk loading waste.
